REVIVE & THRIVE
Celebrating 115 years
"On this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not
prevail against it." - Matthew 16:18
The First Church of God, Inc., has been a beacon of faith for over a century. With strong affiliations to the Church of God Ministries in Anderson Indiana, The National Association of the Church of God and the Eastern New York General Assembly, for 115 years the church has remained committed to empowering leaders and nurturing spiritual growth. And as we reflect on our church's rich history, we must remember the leaders who left a legacy for Generations Following.

FOUNDING AND EARLY YEARS

The church's roots trace back to 1909 when a group of women, including Fannie McCord Combs, L. Wardlaw and many others, began prayer meetings in their homes. These gathering led to the establishment of the first Church of God congregation in New York City and the first African American Church in Far Rockaway.
From 12909 to 1947, the church was pastored by various leaders including Rev. Enoch Evans, Rev. William Paschal and Rev. W.H. Delaine. In 1947, Rev James E. Cray became pastor, leading the church for over 30 years. Under his guidance, the current church building was constructed in 1954. After his retirement in 1977, he was honored as Pastor Emeritus.

Rev. Dr. Arthur W. Davenport's Leadership

In 1977, Rev. Dr. Arthur W. Davenport assumed leadership serving for 47 years. Under his direction, the church grew in both numbers and mission; focusing on reaching the rockaways and beyond. Rev. Davenport's commitment to discipleship and community service has left a lasting legacy and the honor of Pastor Emeritus.

Superstorm Sandy and Restoration

in 2012, Superstorm Sandy devastated Far Rockaway and severely damaged the church. Despite this, First Church became a hub for disaster relief, providing essential services to the community. Restorations efforts began soon after with worship temporarily held at Challenge Preparatory Charter School. In 2017, the congregation returned to a fully renovated sanctuary!

Rev. John W. Grable's Leadership

In 2019, Rev. Davenport retired and Rev. John W. Grable was voted in as Pastor on January 1st, 2020. Rev. Grable continues the church's mission as we focus on discipleship, community outreach and spiritual growth. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the church shifted to online services as they continued to support the community and members with food distribution, virtual bible study and prayer meetings.

Legacy and Ongoing Ministry

First Church has been instrumental in developing leaders who have gone on to serve in ministry worldwide. Among the many ministers trained here are those such as Bishop Timothy J. Clarke, Bishop Wallace F. Hazzard, Bishop Whitfield Blenman and many others. Today the church continues to thrive with ministries including Audio Visual, Children's Church, the Food Pantry and Small Prayer Groups. The theme for the church's ongoing ministry is "Revive And Thrive" based on Psalms 85:6. A prayer encouraging members to grow in fellowship with each other, discipleship, unity and outreach.

Looking Ahead

As we enter out 116th year, and Pastor Grable's Fifth Pastoral year, we are reminded of Gods Faithfulness and the importance of passing our legacy of faith to the next generation. With continued focus on discipleship, prayer and community engagement, the First Church of God remains committed to sharing the gospel and serving the Rockaways and Beyond for Christ.

May God continue to bless First Church of God as we move forward, building on our history and great Legacy!
